Planet 51 was one of those movies that looked FANTASTIC in the theater and I waited anxiously to see it. Somehow, Emmy (my current excuse for seeing animated movies) saw it with friends or a grandma and I managed to miss it until Saturday when it popped onto our Netflix instant que! I was surprised AND pleased...and emmy and I decided some popcorn and mommy-daughter time was definitely in order.
One of the things I was first struck by is how I felt it started with a bang but seemed to get the feeling of being repetitive after awhile. I felt like I had seen similar storylines before - maybe it was that I felt there were several different storylines that had all been mooshed together into one to make this film. I appreciated several of the funny moments that were used on the trailers for this movie, but apart from those hysterical highlights that I had watched with such anticipation to see the entire film, I was not impressed with the rest of the movie.
The animation was good, the voices were okay...there's really no reason why I should have left feeling "meh" about the movie, but I guess it just goes to show you that sometimes the funny bits that they let out in advance of a movie can set up too many expectations for excellence beyond what they managed to create in the actual movie. The scene where the alien mom is trying to feed the alien child some sort of medicine and the kid refuses to take it and the mom says "take it, or a big bad human will get you" and suddenly a scary looking human busts down the side of the house and the kid snatches the bottle from the mom's hands and chugs it? That stuff was FUNNY. The long melodramatic scenes that felt...forced...or even stretched made me wish for the ending credits to come sooner than they actually did.
