The movie had Tom Selleck in it, it HAD to be good, right? :)
Tom Selleck works as a single dad (widowed) of a precocious 8ish or 9ish year old boy. He's a cop who ended up going "robot" when the good old US of A decided to opt into the Robot Age and work side-by-side with them in daily life. Basically an old futuristic movie, which is usually pretty entertaining.
Michael Crichton directed this movie and after the long build at the start, there's a small amount of action that rises quickly and stays interesting when we run into a pretty freaky villain coming into his own (played by Gene Simmons...yes, THAT Gene Simmons) and add in a "Betty" police office/partner (played by Cynthia Rhodes)and a rescued "Veronica" love interest (played by Kirstie Alley). I would also be remiss if I didn't add here that the Chief of Police was played by G.W. Bailey. He also played the bumbling security guard in Mannequin and I had an extremely hard time taking him seriously as the "angry police chief" in this movie. I kept expecting to see him pull out a rubber gun or trip over something.
The final scene of Runaway is the stuff great action movies are made of. Alarming camera shots, a situation a hero character dreads most, a last-minute perfect-but-impossible solution and then...the final scare. A perfect formula for an ending that made a "pretty good" movie into a "pretty great" one.
