So I know I have mentioned in the past what a Mike Meyers fan I am. The thing is, I have been wanting to see The Love Guru for a long time - pretty much since it came out. I saw that the reviews were pretty lousy, but I assumed that maybe the critics were expecting too much - another franchise like Austin Powers maybe - and they didn't give him enough credit. I was wrong.
The Love Guru was very disappointing. It was uninspired, took cheap shots and recycled bad jokes and was even, at times, very offensive to people of another nationality. To say that I was disappointed would be an understatement.
The movie was basically about a young man who went to India and began following in the footsteps of a Guru. Eventually he came into his own as a guru to others and fought with an inner frustration of not being the best (second best wasn't good enough, obviously) and having the additional challenge of figuring out the puzzle that his predecessor gave him - a chastity belt that he has been unable to figure out how to remove since he first began wearing it years earlier. Not much of a plot - not that it needs to be in order to be a box office success...but when you have bad acting, bad plot and worn out jokes, you don't have much to work with.
