Imagine living in a place where your child was forced to attend a certain school based on the location of your home inside a certain zone. Now imagine that the school that they are required to attend had such low success rates in teaching children that only 53% of the FOURTH GRADE class was literate. Basically, you as a parent are forced to send your child to a school that isn't successfully educating at least half of the children in the school.
Then a superior charter school comes to your city or town. Spots are made available for children based on a Lottery system. Whether or not your little angel will end up a doctor or a streetwalker depends on whether or not you end up with a little yellow pass allowing them to attend the charter school.
This documentary opened my eyes to the struggle some parents experience. I have never considered once that my daughter might be forced to go to a school where the teachers and the students are so lost - the educational system having failed the students and their families just as the students continually fail standardized tests. I have been looking for something new to be THANKFUL for this season - and I have ALWAYS been grateful for the wonderful school Emmy attends, but I am MOST thankful that I live in a city that allows me to choose anywhere I want to enroll her.
