My Flesh and Blood - 2003

Every now and then I am reminded why I decided to do this experiment in the first place. It was because sometimes I see a movie - or in this case, a documentary - that actually makes me feel like I am a better person for seeing it.

This was a documentary about a single woman living in California who adopted 11 children with special needs. They all live together in a house where the weekly grocery bill is around $600.00. She takes them to the hospital, doctor's appointments and all sorts of extra-curricular activities. Imagine doing that with 11 perfectly healthy children - now imagine half the kids have wheelchairs too.

The documentary was very touching - and at one point, they do lose one of the siblings to a serious health problem. It's very shocking and saddening...and losing a child is never a good thing - even if they're in a better place. There are always painful moments recalling happier times.

I was so inspired by her beautiful and endless heart. She had something to give to every one of the kids - and didn't seem to run out of love. So many of the kids were given up by their birth parents to the system because the parents just couldn't take care of the children any more. Yet she gives and gives with very little thought to her own happiness. This is what makes this such an incredible thing to see. There are real life angels walking on earth. She is living proof.
