I have always been enchanted by the ways of the Amish. I guess because everything done the hard way on purpose seems to impress me. :)
The Amish aren't really famous for their new-fangled contraptions, but they are famous for sticking to their beliefs and keeping their lives sacred and protected. There's something to be said for that.
This award-winning PBS documentary takes you where few have gone before. You see the people in the Amish community actually going through their daily lives. You see young people and you hear a personal account from someone who left the order but experienced quite a great deal prior to leaving. You even get to walk into the schoolhouse and see the young children studying and learning their lessons. I was surprised to hear that the teachers are usually grade-school educated Amish girls who showed promise in their class. Also, I was surprised to learn that the learning materials come from an Amish press.
The fact that this documentary is so behind the scenes really means that it goes somewhere most of us have never seen. Whether you support the type of life these people choose to live or not, respecting them is necessary. This documentary will give you so many more reasons to do that.
