(For Thursday 3/17) The Killing of a Chinese Cookie - 2008

If you've ever wondered about the animal, vegetable, mineral (and even SEXUAL) aspects of the FORTUNE COOKIE, this documentary will fill you in on all things cookie!

They start out by discussing the origin of the Fortune Cookie - disputed, of course, as many lasting food inventions are. Many people believe (and I have always heard) that the Hong Kong Noodle Company were the originators, but in this documentary there is some evidence pointing to Japan inventing it, China perfecting it and Americans eating it!

After the basics of the cookie, we also see how others have taken the fortune cookie to another level. Whether it's printing fortunes on tee-shirts and selling them in little Chinese take-away boxes, doing an avant-guard experiment where some people swapped the cookies for other cookies with more interesting fortunes in some eateries across the country or even an entire gallery show on the cookie that involved very explicit and risque art of the cookie - one thing's for sure - I will never take a fortune cookie for granted again...IN BED!
