(For Friday 5/27) Van Gogh: Brush With Genius - 2009

A brief but good example of an art film. Perfect if you enjoy art, have children who enjoy art or if you just want to "brush up" (HA!) on your art knowledge.

This film takes you through a bit of Van Gogh's life - and actually had a unique approach. instead of having a narrator or experts talk much, they have the narrator act as Van Gogh, but the one issue I had was that he was EXTREMELY hard to understand at times and that was pretty distracting.

They glossed over a lot of the tortured soul syndrome that Van Gogh had and seemed to focus a lot on his letters to his brother - not really discussing mental illness, substance abuse, etc. Instead we are left to wonder why a brilliant talent decided to off himself. I feel like they could have come clean a bit more about his addiction issues, but then again, this was created for IMAX and for people of all ages. Maybe they felt it was too gritty.

The art is lovely and the chance to see so many of his works is something everyone should have. I am grateful to have seen it and can recommend it.
