One of the greatest things about Netflix is that they DO NOT scrimp on the documentary fantasticness. At any given moment you can find hundreds of fascinating and well-produced documentaries about everything from trash-art to the first road trip to a town that went completely crazy with a brain-eating virus. TRUE!
This documentaries subject matter might seem a bit dull to some - I mean, can you REALLY fill an HOUR and FIFTY MINUTES with tidbits about the first road trip? YES! You can! And it's full of cliff-hangers (HA!) and peppered with moments of laughter. What poor H. Nelson Jackson went through on his excursion across the United States makes you SHUDDER to think how he STILL managed to make it without any outside funding, without any official outside assistance and as a novice who just decided on a bet to try and make the first trans-continental trip in an auto - from San Fransisco, California all the way to Manhattan.
On May 23, 1903 H. Nelson Jackson and his hired partner, a mechanic named Sewell K. Crocker and an automobile made by the Winton company headed out on a journey none had successfully made prior. The reactions of the people across the states as these two attempted to navigate cattle paths as roadways were priceless. In so many cases the entire town would turn out to see them roll into town and in many cases they had to stop since it seemed like hardly a day went by when *something* didn't break, fall off or go south with the car.
This documentary would probably be of interest to anyone 12 and over who loves trivia, travel or tie rod ends! HAHAHAH. Sorry, you should know by now that I seem to crack myself up a lot in my reviews! This one comes HIGHLY recommended and is just plain fun and when you find yourself looking agog at your friend/partner/pet as you follow along the journey that these two (plus adopted bulldog Bud from Caldwell, Idaho) made, you can thank me for recommending it!
