For those of you who enjoy British Comedy, the words "Are You Being Served" likely conjures up thoughts of John Inman as Mr. Humphrey's saying "I'm Freeeee" and Molly Sugden as Mrs. Slocum talking about her cat. For me, "Are You Be Served" makes me first think of my childhood - side by side with my legally blind grandfather as the two of us watched episodes on the tiny color television on the little rolling cart in the indoor porch they had in my grandparent's cape cod home in Plainville, CT.
Are You Being Served - The Movie was basically a long episode of the television show - only funnier! They reused a lot of the same inside jokes and double entendres that made the television show famous and added in a few more sight gags for good measure. In the movie, the cast travels from the department store they work for, Grace Brothers, to a place in Spain called Costa Plonka on a joint holiday. They arrive to find their rooms are not ready and they must stay in tents for the first night. We also discover (unbeknownst to them) that there is an uprising occurring the next morning. As they sit and enjoy a leisurely breakfast, they become sitting ducks in the midst of gunfire - but they keep it light and humorous - putting Mr. Humphrey's in a habit and Young Mr. Lucas running back and forth trying to keep alive and find a bowler hat for them to use to surrender.
I enjoyed this movie a great deal - and I am grateful that Jeff found it in the DVD bin at some store and brought it home as a little gift for me a month or so ago. As much as I enjoy Netflix, there's nothing like watching a movie curled up in bed.
