Nick and Norah's Infinite Playlist - 2008

When Blockbuster Video went out of business in Boise a year ago or so, they held a sale where you could go and buy the previously viewed DVD's for about $2.00 each. Four of them were purchased - one, Lars and the Real Girl, was viewed almost immediately in our household (and loved) and the other 3 have basically just sat on a shelf waiting for viewing. Last night, I decided I was opting for a DVD again instead of Netflix so that I could relax in bed to watch the movie after (another) long day. I grabbed Nick and Norah's Infinite Playlist because music and I have always been close compadres and I was excited to hear the indie music that I knew this movie promised - and I was not disappointed. In fact, if I had only watched it sooner, I would have discovered Vampire Weekend sooner!

Nick and Norah are two high school students - played by Michael Cera (from Juno) as Nick and Kat Dennings (from The House Bunny) as Norah. These two knew of each other but hadn't actually met prior to kissing in a club where Nick is performing with his band and Norah is with her friends. They both share a love of music - most especially the group Where's Fluffy. In fact, before heading out for the evening, both Nick and Norah and their friends find out that their beloved Where's Fluffy will be playing...somewhere...that night. The goal of the evening involves finding Where's Fluffy and having the concert experience of their lives.

This movie surprised and delighted me because I actually brought reading material to bed in case I got bored. I tried opening the book (and actually used it once to shield my eyes during a particularly graphic vomit moment in the movie) but I was transfixed by the movie. It wasn't that there was so much action I couldn't bare to tear my eyeballs off of the screen, but it was different. It was interesting, voyeuristic, fed a need to see nerds find each other and win. I always like when nerds are the heroes of the movies...and I think a lot of other nerds do too. I know Hollywood has noticed this and I hope movies like this continue to erupt onto the scene because it actually took me back for just a moment to the John Hughes days when things were a little bit more rose-colored and my nerdiness was just blossoming. It's a beautiful thing.
