Step Brothers - 2008

Will Ferrell is a comedic hero to me 90% of the time. Elf? LOVE IT. The Saturday Night Live Cowbell sketches? 1 and 2? LOVE THEM. I GOTTA HAVE MORE COWBELL. Anchorman? My GOSH, depressed mental patients should be prescribed viewing. You can see why I absolutely thought I would LOVE Step Brothers. Hmmm...except I didn't. In fact, I barely cracked a smile. Which is too bad because I had such high hopes.

Step Brother is a movie about two almost 40-something year old men who are still acting like children and living at home with Mom and Dad - respectively. When "mom" and "dad" meet at a convention and fall for one another, the two men become brothers. After several fights and arguments, eventually they bond over mutual hatred for another brother. Eventually mom and dad have some serious issues (most if not all stemming from the problems the brothers cause) and decide to seperate...leaving the boys to learn how to become men in the real world.

The thing I had the most problem with in regards to this movie is that you can only beat a dead horse so long. Basically the idea that these almost 40-year-olds can somehow get away with acting like 8 year olds for all those years and have basically no marketable skills and crack the same jokes just warmed over and served slightly differently is beyond my ability to comprehend. 20-somethings MAYBE. I know that that's part of what is supposed to make this movie funny, but it comes off as tired, sad and desperate. I expected a bit more "funny" and less "dummy" from Will Ferrell and John C. Riley. I tend to forgive and forget pretty easily though.
