Anchorman: The Legend of Ron Burgandy - 2004

Wow, I had NO IDEA that seeing Will Ferrell in Step Brothers a few days ago was going to color my opinion on Anchorman when I watched it last night...but it sure did. I started noticing that Ferrell surrounded himself with INCREDIBLE actors in this movie that tend to hold him up in the scenes. He said "by Oden's hammer" and all that stuff that he's just done on Saturday Night Live in the past.

Steve Carell, Paul Rudd, Christina Applegate, Chris Parnell, Fred Willard, Jack Black (my hero) - there's a whole lot of star power there that I didn't initially realize. It took seeing Ferrell in a pretty lousy movie a few days ago to realize that his character, Brennan in THAT movie looked a bit like Buddy in Elf and Buddy in Elf looked a little like Ron Burgandy who looked a lot like some of his different characters on SNL. I guess my lesson here is that I should wait a little longer between Will Ferrell movies.

Anchorman is about a late 1970's era newscaster facing the reality of women's lib in the workplace, along with the realization that he just isn't as cool as he thought he was. Supporting actors (Carell and Rudd primarily) make the "new anchor team" scenes hilarious - especially Carell as mentally challenged "Brick". My favorite lines from the entire movie belong to him:

Brick Tamland: Excuse me, Veronica?
Veronica Corningstone: Yes? What is it, Brick?
Brick Tamland: I would like to extend to you an invitation to the pants party.
Veronica Corningstone: Excuse me?
Brick Tamland: [struggling] The... party. With the... with the pants. Party with pants?
Veronica Corningstone: Brick, are you saying that there's a party in your pants and that I'm invited?
Brick Tamland: That's it.

The anchor names are PRICELESS...those alone make this movie worth watching. Wes Mantooth? Oh, and one of my other favorite actors makes a brief cameo - watch for Ben Stiller as the Spanish Language Channel reporter in the Anchorman fight.
