The Blues Brothers - 1980

So I went two weeks without watching a single movie I have ever seen before. Now that I am entering another phase of studying for a (stupid) exam I need to pass, I figured I had better start watching a few best-loved classics in order for me to have plenty of time to study too. Because studying while watching a movie is a lot easier if you have seen the movie 2,451 times before.

Such as it is with THIS movie. The Blues Brothers. The first time I saw this movie it was around Easter 2003. I had seen bits and pieces - I had heard good things. My best buddy Jana had a poster on her wall and I always wondered what the tag line "It's 106 miles to Chicago, we got a full tank of gas, half a pack of cigarettes, it's dark, and we're wearing sunglasses" actually means.

The Blues Brothers is tied for first place for my favorite movie of all time. Every time I watch it I feel like I see something different. And sometimes when I watch it, I basically just watch it for the Mall Scene - where they casually mention that the new Oldsmobile's are in early as they sail past in their cars, tearing apart windows and kiosks. I love it for all the reasons people love a good movie. There is humor, there is danger, there are crazy stunts and there is hope that the characters will actually manage to accomplish the impossible. For these reasons, The Blues Brothers has earned my undying love, respect and devotion. Don't ask me if I like Jake or Elwood better - I have no idea. I will, however, get into a long discussion about whether or not the mall car chase or the one through Chicago on the way to pay the taxes is better. I will also gladly discuss how much I HATE Illinois Nazis. Oh, and how I once knew a guy who was a prison guard at Joliet and he was there the day they filmed there. He said they were going around looking for guards to act in the movie and he will forever regret that he had to leave for the day before the filming started.

You just don't get much better than this film...unless it's the one I have planned to watch tomorrow - my "other" favorite movie of all time.
