Happy Gilmore - 1996

I saw this movie when it came out in the theaters - it was my first date with Jeff Almeida. At the time it came out, it was Adam Sandler's biggest hit I think - he had done "Airheads" and "Billy Madison", but this was far more entertaining and better polished than those two movies. I remember thinking to myself "Now THIS guy makes me laugh"... of course he has the same problem that Will Farrell and Mike Meyers had - the characters they introduced on SNL seem to come out somehow in every movie they do. While I still laugh, I feel a bit cheated with many of Adam Sandler's movies because I feel like he's just repeating and remixing some of his more popular characters in his movies.

Happy Gilmore is a hockey player who happens to just be temporarily playing golf in order to raise money to get his grandmother's home that his grandfather built back from the IRS. He ends up making a couple of friends, a lot of fans and really ONE major enemy on the Pro-Golf tour. The enemy's name is Shooter McGavin and he's played by Christopher McDonald. Tell me someone, why do I get Christopher McDonald and Joe Piscipo mixed UP all the time!? Anyway, McGavin makes Gilmore's life pretty difficult and foils attempts to save grandma's home from the tax man. Gilmore makes a mighty wager - if he beats McGavin in the upcoming golf tournament, he takes home grandma's house (which Shooter buys at government auction) and the coveted "Gold Jacket".

This movie is a great way to take your mind off of everything and just veg for 90 minutes. There are no commitments, no chains holding you to watching it all the way through and you don't get to the end wishing there was a sequel. Pure fluff and relaxing fluff at that.
