What an assembly of men for a cast! George Clooney, Ewan McGregor, Kevin Spacey and Jeff Bridges...the funniest thing is, I asked myself mid-way through this movie why ANY of them considered doing it in the first place.
The Men Who Stare at Goats is about a group of men known as the New Earth Army who specialize in...well..."special ops" by using some armed forces techniques but mostly non-injurious and non-damaging options for violence. It's a whole new kind of army - touchy-feely and psychics only need apply. McGregor's character, Bob Wilton, is a reporter on the run from his real life problems when he runs into Clooney's character, Lyn Cassady, in Iraq. Cassady's reputation proceeded him and Wilton ends up following him to the ends of the earth - well, the ends of the desert anyway. Cassady educates Wilton on the New Earth Army and helps him find his place as one of the "Jedi".
The Jedi joke is pretty funny the first couple of times, but you can't base a successful movie on ONE joke. It was good enough - a pretty enjoyable and pretty light movie to watch, all things considered. I doubt I will ever look to watch it again, but as far as movies go, I could see it keeping a room full of guys chuckling and being pretty popular with older retired military guys wanting a pretty big laugh about the old days.
