Steve Martin will always be one of my favorite actors...but not because of THIS movie.
While The Jerk is a pretty okay movie in it's own right, it had far more significance back in 1979 when it was considered more cutting-edge humor. Right now, it looks like a pre-cursor to movies like Austin Powers and any other movie done by an SNL alum. It's true that THIS movie had to exist in order that the other ones could exist, but at the same time, it's my opinion that in many cases, the newer movies have improved upon the things that DO make The Jerk funny.
The Jerk is Navin Johnson, a "poor black child" from the south. Navin has a desire to strike out on his own and become something. Through a series of events, Navin meets up with someone who distributes inventions and shows him his idea for a way to gently take eyeglasses on and off. The distributor ends up selling the device and making Navin a millionaire. Unfortunately, Navin's invention has a serious flaw and a settlement to all buyers causes him to lose everything he amassed by financial means, but Navin manages to hang on to the things that matter most.
