Netflix added a WHOLE bunch of National Geographic specials to their documentary listings! I was so excited to see that, I immediately watched one of their specials from a couple of years ago...Inside North Korea.
I kind of can't get enough data about North Korea. I love finding out more about them - maybe because I find it almost impossible to imagine that there's actually an entire country full of people that think Kim Jong-il is some sort of god. With a small g. But they do...they believe he hung the moon...or anything else Dear Leader tells them to believe.
In this documentary, Lisa Ling goes to North Korea and acts as a reporter documenting a physician from the United States who comes to North Korea to operate on people's eyes who have gone blind due to cataracts. Because they have such poor medical conditions there, many of Korea's people suffer from blindness at very early ages. Lisa Ling takes as many chances as she can get to try and get outside the hospital to see the REAL North Korea. She is allowed to tape a segment inside an apartment of one of the people who received the surgery. No pictures on the wall except those of Dear Leader. She is treated to a song and dance dedicated to Dear Leader and when she asks a question like "which poster is your favorite of dear leader" and is told ALL pictures of him are our favorites...well, of course. We should have seen THAT coming. The documentary may be an eye opener for people who are unfamiliar with North Korea, but for those who know how things work there it simply serves as a reminder of what happens when you give one man too much power.
