2001: A Space Odyssey - 1968

So yeah. It was almost 10-10-10 when I finally managed to suck it up, sit down and watch this movie. Jeff surprised the family with 2001 and 2010 - neither of which Emmy nor I had seen - and informed me he would make our movie plans for the weekend.

I was a bit dismayed at the start. Angry loud clashing music...then darkness...then angry music, angry apes, crazy breathing noises, computers taking over and killing people...2001 is not a feel-good movie. It was also pretty tedious, actually. Although, I understand that it exists to set up the second movie - but apparently there was like 15 year between the two. I have to ask myself. What did everyone see in 2001: A Space Odyssey and what on earth made them wait 15 whole years to film the sequel!? Don't tell me it's cuz some dude hadn't written part two yet. There were a million script writers in Hollywood in the 1970's - they could have filmed it sooner.

And what was up with the no dialog? I know it was supposed to be an art film...but why then did it get so much play? I know there have been more films that have been launched into orbit (ha!) in the box office that weren't expected to maybe do so well - but wow. I kept trying to remind myself that it was the late 60's and it was the space race and I *WAS* impressed with how many of the things that THEN seemed to get a huge WOW factor are now just commonplace (the televisions in the plane seats) and laughed at the juice boxes of food...but still...this movie just left me with more questions than answers. But then again, I suppose it did what Kubrick wanted.
