Grey Gardens - 1975

How is it possible that a documentary could be simultaneously haunting, grotesque and satisfying in a completely indulgent way? Well, look no further than Grey Gardens for an answer.

Big Edie and Little Edie are the stars - especially Little Edie. These relatives of Jackie O. have this rambling dirty house in East Hampton - looking over the ocean. The two of them are slightly to mostly senile and they live a life of solitude - to the point of sickness. Little Edie is there under the pretense of caring for her ailing mother, and Big Edie is there, in many respects, to see that Little Edie doesn't completely lose her grasp on reality.

We're offered a slice of the past that can't be found anywhere today. Little Edie is the picture of society now gone awry. The Edie's are really stuck in the past. Although it's quite sad to see how they live and how mentally sick especially Little Edie is, it's also like a wreck - you have to look and you can't stop watching until you see the credits rolling. Trust me. There are a million quotes from this movie that I will continue to draw upon. Choosing one for a title will be very difficult. Kind of like choosing a favorite "Edie".
