A Christmas Story - 1983

Is there anyone among us who hasn't seen A Christmas Story? I seriously doubt it by now. TNT started showing the movie 24/7 beginning Christmas Eve in 1997 and TBS took the job over in 2004. I know I saw the movie once all the way through about ten years ago. Since then, I leave it on during the craziness of Christmas Eve, but I doubt I have seen the entire thing since that first viewing all those years ago. Until now, I mean. :)

This movie has so many fabulous representations of childhood. From the scary mall Santa to the tongue frozen on a pole (who hasn't done that!?) to getting your mouth washed out with soap and the elusive Christmas gift you want SO much (in this case, a Red Ryder BB Gun) and your parents just won't get you - either for safety or other reasons - and you feel like your life just won't be complete without it.

One of the greatest moments of the film in my opinion has to be the FABULOUS PRIZE of the special little lamp that Ralphie's dad wins. The slinky little leg in stocking with the skirt shade. You know, the one that comes marked in the box "Fragile" - I mean, "Fra-Gee-Lay" - must be french.

The greatest part about the movie is that whether you're 8 or 80, you'll see something in this movie that will strike a chord and remind you of your childhood. We don't exactly have the same type of lifestyle nowadays that Ralphie had, but we have podcasts instead of radio shows! It's a great icebreaker when that family member from out of town comes to Christmas dinner and you run out of things to talk about. It's also a good movie to wrap presents by, to bake cookies by and to even enjoy curled up under a blanket.
