A truly fascinating look at the use (and abuse) of gender roles in motion pictures.
This documentary focuses primarily on the mostly recent emergence of men playing women and women playing men in cinema. Although it did take a short trip back to the Uncle Milty days with Milton Berle, it seemed to get a lot more interesting when delving into the sudden explosion of Devine in the 1960's and 1970's and then spent a good deal of time focusing on the John Travolta part as Edna in Hairspray.
These days, Mrs. Doubtfire almost always gets a laugh. There were a lot of pioneers that took cinema to this place, however. And it's still the more burly men playing women that get the laughs and the accolades. Very interesting interviews with John Waters and many other celebrities discussing swapping roles.
