As a parent there are times in your life when you get to introduce your child to something completely new - something they have never experienced before - and you get to reap the joy of watching them come alive when they experience it. On a small scale, this is what happened when I showed Emmy MST3K last night.
I suppose I should have KNOWN she would like it. She LOVES Weird Al. I mean LOVES. But I digress. She was really skeptical at first - we were taking turns with Netflix - first me, then her, then me - and then I took another turn - even though it was hers. I chose this movie thinking the Christmas theme would be a good one to introduce her to the MST3K series. She made me promise I would turn it off if she didn't like it. We watched the whole thing and we LAUGHED and LAUGHED. A few minutes in...after being introduced to the Robots and to Mike, she looked at me and said "Oh, I get it. They make witty side comments..." I LOVE THIS GIRL!!!!!!!!!
The movie itself was hysterically bad, of course. In it, Santa and Satan fight over the hearts and minds of Mexican children. I know, the plot is enough for you to ralph up your candy canes. We see 3 children...a rich child who wishes for nothing more than his parent's time, a argumentative and evil child who's as bendable as a reed when Satan comes by to tell him to do bad things and a lovely little poor child who wants nothing more than a doll for her Christmas gift. Santa is actually an E.T. Santa - which makes EVERYTHING more interesting. The workshop and the north pole are pretty far advanced technologically speaking - at least for it being the 1950's. This movie is an absolute HOOT for teens and pre-teens and their parents!
