Small Town, Gay Bar - 2006

You all know me and my documentaries by now. I just can't live without them.

Small Town Gay Bar is about a bar located in the middle of the Bible belt of the deep south. I am sure you're aware of the sarcastic comment that "this town has one set of teeth between all it's citizens" - well, this would be one of those towns. Welcome to Mississippi...the land where it's accepted practice to call someone a name because of the color of their skin but you can't love anyone you want to.

The most wonderful thing about this whole documentary is that all of the people are REAL. Not just not actors, but real REAL people. They speak their minds and they share their hearts with the viewers. We go into the bar and see events and programs and see drag queens getting ready for shows and watch some of the staff going out on a limo ride. There's a lot to digest - and there are some difficult moments to get through emotionally. The thing is, the hour and 15 minutes that it takes to visit all of this and for the filmmaker to create a vision in your mind for the type of place this is and the type of people need it so much...well, they just pass in a blur.

If I haven't convinced you to watch it yet - Kevin Smith was the executive producer of this film. Booyah.
