(For Monday 2/21) Auntie Mame - 1958

MAME is one of those movies I can watch again and again and feel the same amout of joy and excitement each time I see it.

Auntie Mame is an older, well-traveled woman who has a young boy suddenly dropped on her doorstep. She becomes his guardian and immediately adores him. She takes the initiative to make sure he has a very VARIED upbringing - including time spent meeting artists and attending an alternative school (naked class anyone?) until suddenly the solictor ALSO in charge of the young man's life realizes that the freedom with which he is being raised COULD become detrimental to him later in life. He requires him to go away to school - but is allowed to come home during breaks to spend time with Mame. In the mean time, Mame loses her fortune, starts work in a department store and then meets a very wealthy man who falls for her and marries her - giving her back the wealthy life she is accustomed to.

Years pass and they both grow older. The little boy becomes a young man and has made very serious and conservative choices for himself. Mame sees that he's headed down the pathway to a very long adulthood unless he changes his outlook (and people he's spending his free time with) a bit. It takes a little convincing, but MAME knows best.
