This was one of those movies that I saw as a youngish girl and didn't really GET until I got older. I laughed at the scenes with the passengers and of course that man with the white hair who kept calling people Shirley, but so many jokes went over my head back then.
Airplane is one of those movies that doesn't really DEFINE the people in my generation, but we don't really know a life without it - which means we can be found swapping quotes back and forth in our daily lives - and I certainly cannot pass up an opportunity to respond when someone says "Surely you don't think that can happen" and I say "Of course I do, and DON'T call me Shirley" - even in the most serious of settings, this still seems apropos.
I am pretty sure this is the only movie that Leslie Neilson and Kareem Abdul-Jabbar starred in together...and on top of that, the only movie that had a co-star who was a blow up doll (the co-pilot). There's a small possibility that someone reading this review hasn't seen this movie - if that's the case, you're probably a communist. Just kidding.
