When in Hawaii this past winter, we visited Pearl Harbor. I have yet to watch any movies about Pearl Harbor (other than the documentary at the museum), but when this movie came up on my radar, I decided I needed to see it for other reasons too. It's got a very well-known (and well duplicated) love scene between two main characters on a beach. This was pretty much everything I knew about the movie before hand.
After watching it, I can tell you, of course, there's a lot more than THAT going on. Prewitt (an army man) has transferred to Hawaii. He was a boxer before transferring and decided he wants nothing more to do with the sport. When he arrives at his new post, he's informed by his new captain that he's expected to continue boxing there.
Prewitt soon takes up with his captain's wife - a passionate affair that is actually a somewhat common occurrence for her. The affair ends when Prewitt tells her that he doesn't want to be an officer. This ends his chances for anything permanent with her.
After another member of his group is beaten and dies, Prewitt goes looking for revenge. He finds himself severely injured after a run-in with a Staff Sergeant and he tries to heal in the apartment of a bar girl he meets named Lorene. Unable to find rest or heal from his injury, Prewitt returns to camp when the Japanese attack Pearl Harbor.
