(For Monday 3/14) The Bells of Saint Mary's - 1945

There's something truly beautiful about an emotionally stirring movie from the 1940's - acted by two incredibly gifted actors like Bing Crosby and Ingrid Bergman. In this movie, Crosby plays Father O'Malley and Bergman plays Sister Mary Benedict. Like many rivals, O'Malley and Benedict almost start as polite friends. It's soon determined between difference in opinion that that's where the kindness between the two ends and the gloves come on.

O'Malley doesn't share Benedict's old fashioned way of doing things - instead choosing to think outside the preacher box, so to speak. He also supports closing the private Catholic school that Benedict runs in favor of sending the kids to a more modern school.

However, a little light seems to shine down from above when a wealthy business man builds a beautiful building right next door to the run-down old school and Sister Benedict feels as though she can pray hard and he will give them the building for the school's use - solving her problems and giving her a new school for the children. But why would a wealthy businessman just abandon his plans to make money and give away his profits? Maybe...just maybe...he'll decide to hedge his bets on the outcome of his soul in the afterlife.
