(For Tuesday 3/22) Brahm Stoker's DRACULA - 1992

Dark and twisted and sexual. That's what I think of Bram Stoker's Dracula.

I remember when this came out everyone was exclaiming over it. Friends said "YOU MUST SEE IT" but I completely ignored them because I had no interest in seeing a horror movie. But you know, I was flipping channels and it was coming on cable and I decided that it didn't LOOK like a dark horror movie - it looked like the Tim Burton Alice in Wonderland a little. I was encouraged.

It was very stylized and wicked - but I felt it was far more about how far a movie can push boundaries of taste and edge ever closer to an X rating without going over. Winona Ryder was believable and rather than it just being about a couple of characters, I was surprised to see a fairly well developed cast and lots of blood and grossness, goriness and sex. Some people's idea of a good time. Just not mine.
