(For Tuesday 3/8) Stripes - 1981

Stripes is one of those movies I remember from when I was a kid. Of course when I watch it as an adult I am absolutely shocked that I saw it "as a kid"...there are enough half-naked ladies in it that I am even on the verge of being appalled. But hey, those were different times I guess. Sometimes I think I am raising a Waaaaay more innocent child than I ever was. BUT, I digress.

Stripes stars Bill Murray and Harold Ramis - two of my all-time favorites. John Candy makes an appearance too - as OX - the lonesome and overweight guy who's just looking for a spa program. Basically Murray (John) and Ramis (Russell) are plodding through life. John's girlfriend leaves him, he loses his job and apartment all in the span of about 2 hours. Russell is teaching bop songs to foreigners. I know. It seems almost meant to be that they should abandon their boring lives and head for a fantastic future IN THE ARMY! It's not exactly what they expect and John ends up butting heads non-stop with Sergeant Hulka - their drill Sergeant.

After a mortar accident on the eve of their graduation from boot camp, John has the chance to show everyone what he's really made of - and then when he succeeds, take his capers overseas to Italy where the entire platoon has been selected to watch over the most dangerous fighting weapon the Army has - unfortunately, it looks like a motor home and John and Russell can't resist a little spin. That leads to trouble in Czechland. Ultimately if you're looking for a funny 80's comedy with a well-deserved "R" rating, you should definitely watch this movie.
