(For Saturday 4/23) Up - 2010

What can ANYONE say about Up? A movie that wins as many awards as this one MUST have been incredible, right? You know, I thought so the first time I saw it. This post won't be popular with many, but I really have to say that I liked this movie a LOT LESS the second time around.

Ed Asner does an amazing job as crabby old man Carl Frederickson...but you know, Ed Asner was MADE to be a crabby old man. HELLO LOU GRANT. This movie was strikingly sad the first time I saw it. I was shocked the themes that were presented - loss of pregnancy, death, heartache, old age, divorce, parental absence - I was beginning to think someone at Pixar lost a bet about how many depressing topics could be placed in a Disney movie.

But then I thought "surely the REST of the movie will make up for this" and the first time around, it did. It was the newness of the story then. The surprise factor. The second time around I realized it was just a mish-mash of different ideas - not cohesive - and I really didn't care for it after all. Sure, the idea that we all have to say goodbye eventually to those we love AND learn to shed the material things that remind us of them...well, I get that...okay. But you're looking at the girl who still has her grandmother's bottle of chili pepper spice mix in the cupboard. And I still use Grandma's sponge-holder to hold my potato scrubber. And I have her engagement ring. And I don't intend to let go of these things ever ever ever. And no Pixar movie will ever make saying goodbye to someone I love easier. It just made it more raw. Yeah. So...not a fan.
