(For Thursday 3/31) Practical Magic - 1998

Another of my many comfort movies of choice. Something about this one always makes me feel happy. Somehow it's the mixture of girls orphaned, girls teased, girls looking forward to growing up - and finding out there is still pain, still bad choices and still scary things. Somehow though, they survive. They beat the odds, they band together and they make something beautiful from something so unfortunate.

The soundtrack is one of my all-time favorites. As far as soundtracks go, it's as diverse as you can get. Instrumentals, Harry Nilson, Joni Mitchell and Stevie Nicks. Still, it works. In fact, my favorite Stevie Nicks song is called Crystalline and it's off this soundtrack. I guess I just identify with it. It has a lot of meaning behind it - and it matches perfectly with the theme of the movie.

Some people might be extremely offended that I find this movie so spectacular - so special. To them they might assume that because it's got witchcraft in it, it makes it offensive or even against Biblical principals. I tired of talking with people like this a long time ago. These are the same people who feel watching Harry Potter movies makes me wicked too. To those, I say ART IS ART. Tell the people who make the Left Behind series to make a better movie and maybe I'll watch them too.
