Children of Invention - 2009

If you're a fan of MLM's, skip this movie.

Children of Invention is a movie very reminscent of the times we're currently living in. Elaine Cheng is a mom who is working hard to keep her family afloat. The beginning of the movie sees Elaine and the children, Raymond and Tina, leaving their foreclosed home in the suburbs of Boston as the Sheriff stands by watching guard. Soon after, we see the Chengs arrive at a temporary housing situation offered by a friend and former employer of Elaine. He offers her a job, free housing (with a few strings attached) and Elaine accepts.

Elaine works during the day showing homes to Chinese families and studying for her Real Estate license. She also spends her spare time searching for MLM's. (Multi Level Marketing group) MLM's offer some a quick way at making a lot of money. A couple examples of MLM's would be Mary Kay, Herbalife and Pampered Chef. If you start at the beginning of an MLM that becomes popular, you stand to make a lot of money. Elaine takes the chance on an MLM and signs a great deal of people to be "under" her...she expects a check for thousands of dollars in pay. In actuality, she shows up to get her check and she instead finds the police searching the premises. She tries to run, but ends up arrested.

Stuck in jail and PETRIFIED to tell the police that she has two little children at home, Elaine finds herself completely helpless. Tina and Raymond end up fending for themselves - finding a way to survive for the time between when she's arrested and when the police eventually search her home and they find the children - scared and huddled in the temporary housing.

Children of Invention is both unique and moving. It's a new story, yet it could be anyone's story. I highly recommend it.
