Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows, Part 1 - 2010

Yeah, you knew I would be reviewing this one, didn't you?

Last night we joined the groups of women, men and youth of all ages as we journeyed into the beginning of the end for Harry, Hermione and Ron...along with countless other Potter characters. It was with a combined feeling of anticipation and wistfulness that I watched the moments from book 7 creep across the screen. The people on either side of me weren't as attached to the books as I have been - reading them a minimum of twice each - and in many cases, I've lost count the number of times I have read them. In fact, the person on my left hadn't read even a page of book 7...so there were a lot of surprises there for her.

Each time I watched a scene unfold, I felt as if I had already imagined it there anyway. The actors playing the characters had long ago morphed with the characters in my head - so when I saw Ron as Cattermole and Mad-Eye's Eye in the door when Harry, Ron and Hermione invaded the Ministry of Magic, it all felt as though I had seen it before.

In hindsight, I think I should have waited until it came on DVD to show a 9 year old. It was rated PG-13 for a reason. A little bit of a skin scene with Harry and Hermione (Ron's misguided fantasy) and the violence - especially in Bathilda Bagshot's house - was very graphic. The movie was also very quiet, very stark, very deep, very sad, very emotional. Just as the book was to all those Potter fans reading avidly at 12:05 am on July 21, 2007. So until Part 2 comes out in May 2011, I will wait - patiently, actually. I'm in no hurry for the final end to begin.

Oh, and a quick parting shot to all the "Christians" who think Harry Potter is corrupting youth and a satanic example that too many people are choosing to follow - in this movie there is a scene where Harry and Hermione are walking through Godrick's Hollow late at night on Christmas Eve and Harry asks Hermione if she thought his parents would be in the church singing Christmas carols right then if they were still alive. She answers yes. SO BITE ME FANATICAL FREAKS. That is all.
