A Face In The Crowd - 1957

AMC is a great resource for good yet unknown older movies. Andy Griffith stars in A Face in the Crowd. It's a movie primarily about how someone can come from out of nowhere to create a sensation - and how human nature deals with that.

Griffith plays Larry Rhodes, a jailbird with talent. An Arkansas disk jockey finds him and decides to give him a chance at stardom. Before anyone realizes it, Rhode's mannerisms that seem offensive to many, seem to draw a huge audience.

Rhodes becomes famous almost overnight. He starts to get a larger and larger ego and before long, he starts taking advantage of everyone around him. In the end, the person who helped create the monster has the opportunity and ability to do him in - and so she does. Rhodes has a difficult time accepting his loss in celebrity. Those around him tell him that he has a chance to be something again someday but he'll never get back the shine he once had. A very solemn nod to stars today who take their fame for granted - and find themselves on the losing end of things when it all topples down.
