(For Saturday 2/26) The Gospel of Judas - 2005

I remember years ago when watching a documentary about the Bible might elicit a desire to watch paint dry as an intermission - just to add a little excitement to my day! Not so anymore. Nowadays I find myself mystified and completely enchanted by most religious documentaries. I think there has been a push, definitely, to encourage producers to "Hollywood up" the documentaries coming out. Heaven knows I appreciate it. ;)

When you think of the name Judas, usually negative connotations come to mind. In the English language, the name JUDAS has come to mean a betrayer - or a traitor. Someone who has turned their back on you or sold you out. So of course when I saw that there might be NEW information about this least respected disciple, I had to see it - it is a little rare that a NEW gospel just appears.

A crumbling scroll was located and verified to have been real. Basically, in short, we are introduced to the idea that Judas was asked by Jesus to follow through with the betrayal...and he had to be convinced. Basically, the Gospel of Judas takes us through the process and science of how the work was verified by scientists and historians as well as what it actually said. There was a certain percentage of the work that was not able to be translated - as it was in pieces due to the care it was given in recent years prior to the "discovery". Certainly the idea that Judas was less of a monster than he was made out to be in the four gospels IS an enlightening thought. The fact that he might have been carrying out Jesus's wishes from the beginning certainly isn't beyond comprehension. It does seem as though these mysterious gospels are a bit more lore than fact. But personally, I am always willing to believe that there is a lot of good under the bad in people - and the story of Judas is one that has a more interesting points.
