(For Monday 2/28) Mary Poppins - 1964

Just like macaroni and cheese, Disney movies are comfort food for the movie watcher's soul.

Every now and then this year, I have noticed that I have an innate desire to watch something innocent, kid-friendly and musical. On Monday, I had that urge again and I was able to fill it with Mary Poppins.

Julie Andrews absolutely IS Mary Poppins. Dick Van Dyke in all his skinny glory IS Bert. And together they make a charming and lovely couple of friends who create a wonderful (and socially educational) experience for two little children and their family.

Jane and Michael Banks are living with nannies watching over them - and not liking it much - when Mary Poppins flies (literally) into the picture. She takes them on many unbelievable adventures as they travel through chalk drawings, clean up their room with magical soldiers and even have tea on the ceiling. The underlying story within a story (the Inception?) is that Jane and Michael's mom and dad are very hands-off as far as their children go. They need gentle reminding that the true blessings of being a parent is that the children can teach you as much as a fellow adult. Mary Poppins uses experiences with both parents that remind them that taking time out from personal and professional activities to be a KID again can remind you how much joy and fulfillment can be had when you drop the grown up perceptions and just have fun.
