(For Saturday 3/5) Inside Mecca - 2003

The deep down and dirty (literally) experience of pilgrims traveling to Mecca to express their faith and make the annual trip to learn more about themselves and make new and renewed commitments to their faith in daily life.

We meet an Islamic America - white as snow - and someone who looks like your friend who's a soccer mom's mom. She's overjoyed as she shares her experience going to Mecca for the first time. You have to have permission from the oldest male in your family if you are female - and I don't think she was completely certain that was ready to experience the craziness that ensues when millions of people travel from all over the world to end up in a specific place at a specific time.

It was a very non-judgemental and informative documentary about the muslim faith. I felt that it offered a good first-person experience about what mecca is about and about the history of why muslims believe what they believe. It became less of an unknown and more of an education about a faith that few Americans can honestly say they understand.
