If you were looking for another empowering Disney Princess, I think you don't need to look any further. I was wondering how on earth they were going to be able to promote Rapunzel as a forward-thinking girly-girl. I was quite surprised to see what a kind, intelligent, loving and capable young woman that Disney shows in Tangled.
A young woman, born into royalty, is taken from her life as a princess and kept in a tower by a woman who presents herself as her mother - for just one reason: her hair. Rapunzel not only has LONG hair, but she has MAGICAL hair. Healing hair. Just the touch of her hair and a song from her lips and if you're old, you become young. If you're sick, you become well. A rare and special gift indeed. The problem is, as in many cases when someone has a talent that surpasses understanding, the gift belongs to all people - not ONE person.
When Rapunzel approaches age 18, she decides to take a leap of faith (and a leap out of the tower) when happenstance brings a young man to the tower. They head towards the lanterns that fly every year on Rapunzel's birthday and experience so much life that Rapunzel had been missing along the way. Of course there are wonderful songs, wonderful characters and a true love story that tells us that no matter how bad things are and no matter how bad PEOPLE can be, goodness is just around the corner for whomever chooses that path.
