For the old movie lovers out there, life isn't complete without viewing this gem.
I first saw this movie in the 1980's, shortly after I moved in with my dad. I think we were still looking for a little common ground between us and he always loved popcorn and we both liked movies. One snowy winter afternoon, this movie came on as a part of the ORVILLE REDENBOCKER'S AFTERNOON MOVIE CLASSICS program. I think it was principally designed to sell popcorn - but nevertheless - Dad and I were both enraptured by this film.
Meet Joe Howard, young orphan-type fellow, Pianist extraordinaire. He writes music in his spare time while working for an organ seller. He plays songs all day on organs to earn his keep, whilst writing masterpieces at night. He ends up selling his first song "Hello My Baby" to a Miss Lulu Madison - a vaudeville actress that he ends up making nice with and joining on the road. Of course Howard also has his baggage - pretty baggage named Katie - his "almost sister" who joins him in his new stardom as a costume assistant.
Some failed relationships and many stage shows later, Howard and Katie part ways, Katie makes it big and Howard comes back into town only to realize that the dream he was chasing was right in front of him all the time. ABSOLUTE MASTERPIECE of early cinema. Highly recommended - one of my all-time favorites. The colors, the songs, the acting, the history...everything about this one is a charmer.
