We had such luck with the other old Don Knotts movie, I decided to try this one too.
The Incredible Mr. Limpet is about a gentleman who's really more gentle than man. He's a civil servant - absolutely patriotic - and wishes that he could get into the military since he's seeing everything leading to the possibility of confrontation between America and Germany in WWII.
The thing is, Mr. Limpet - Henry - has a thing for FISH. He dreams of them, carries them with him, dotes over them at home and reads about them in his spare time. One day, while going along with his wife and wife's dear friend George (who she still has a thing for) to Coney Island, he accidentally falls into the water and becomes...A FISH.
So this formerly 4-F fellow ends up leading the way when it comes to finding U-Boats at the bottom of the ocean that American sonar can't detect. He becomes a military HERO and finds a fishy girl friend and feels better about himself than when he was a human.
I suppose if you were to take a very WIDE look at the subject matter of the movie, the moral might even be "love yourself, embrace your interests and be who you wish you could be". Some pretty topical ideas for 1964.
