The coolness that was the original Star Trek movie - I can't help it, I have always thought that the amazingness that was Persis Khambatta ((Ilia)) was just unmatched -is, in my opinion, something that just cannot be equalled. So no one tried. Which made me pretty happy when all was said and done.
The first time I tried to watch this movie, I didn't watch it. So this time, I made sure to pay close attention. Thanks to Jeff Almeida who kind of made sure I watched it - pushing play and saying WAKE UP, HERE'S YOUR MOVIE.
So for those of you thinking that Star Trek was a re-make of Star Trek: The Motion Picture, it's not - it's an all-new and interesting trek into the stars (HA! sorry) and it seems in my opinion to be more approachable for those who are not always inclined to enjoy Sci-Fi movies. There's a good love story (Spock and Uhura) and there's a fly-by-the-seat-of-his-spandex Kirk who impresses with a Beastie Boys car on the edge of a cliff moment at the start of the movie. The plot is solid (the universe will end if a certain villain isn't appeased, yada yada) and the characters are great (sulu? SuME!) and the special effects are newer. There will never be a replacement for the original, but this offers stand-alone cred through the early years that makes for a great couple hours of movie magic!
