A documentary by Oprah Winfrey - I had no idea what to expect from this one. It seemed like a strange topic for her - FLDS teens and their experiences. I was surprised to find that I was interested and entertained (not necessarily in a GOOD way though) throughout the documentary.
This film followed the lives of three teen boys who are brothers who left the FLDS church - the church run by convicted criminal Warren Jeffs. In the "Crick", these boys were just several of dozens of brothers and sisters. Their minds and hearts attempted to break free from the compound where they lived, but as you watch this, your heart breaks a little as you realize that they'll be chasing demons their entire lives.
Fortunately, someone takes them in. UNfortunately, like so many teens who are forced to live in very controlling environments, they go a little "nuts" and try alcohol and drugs to fill the empty space where the lack of family once was. It's so sad to watch them struggle - and then, just when you think two boys might have a chance of figuring out their futures, they are turned down for military service because of a restraining order filed against them by their own "leader". There are moments where you get a glimpse of the sorry state of eduction, love, faith and unconditional love in these boys' lives. No tears shed, but I said a lot of prayers of hope for these kids to find their way.
